Reunion
Part 1
[Author's note: DBZBabe's fanfic got my juices flowing, so my fingers started to type and this is the produce so far. I apologise now for any out-of-character behaviour and I'm not sure when I'll next update, but here we go!]Part 1
The pitter-patter of the rain against the café window was the perfect backdrop for a relaxed, warm coffee. Aurora sipped at her drink while she returned e-mails and arranged appointments for the upcoming weeks. It had been seven years since she had graduated. For the first post-graduate year, she tried to keep in contact with all of her strange bunch of university friends, but as the days grew into months and months into years, eventually she lost touch with most of them.
As she clicked 'send' on an e-mail to one of her teenage clients, someone pulled out the chair opposite to her. The legs scrapped across the laminate floor and heads snapped around to glare at the man. Aurora subtly cringed at the noise and addressed the man without moving her eyes up from the screen.
“Afternoon, James.”
James Taylor was slightly slouched in his chair as he set his skinny double soya ginger mocha frappuchino on the table. James looked tired, but Aurora had come to find that he always had bags under his eyes and a little bit of stubble. He had become an unexpected friend of Aurora's. Their interactions at university had been limited and mostly uneventful, but they became 'coffee-buddies' after frequenting the same café.
“Hey, I bought cake.”
At this, Aurora peered over her laptop and smiled at the tray which had two slices of cake on it. She packed away the computer and pulled one of the plates to her side. “Thank you!”
“I didn't say it was for you.” James stated flatly.
“You didn't say it wasn't.” Aurora stabbed the food with a fork and scooped a bite into her mouth. “Eh, it's kind of dry. You can have it back.”
“See? This is the karma for assuming it was yours and just taking it without asking.” James stated matter-of-factly as he started on his own cake. His face twisted into a look of disappointment. “No, you're right. It is dry.” They both sighed.
There was a silence as both of them took a sip from their drinks. Before any small talk could really get underway, a clap of thunder rattled the sky and a bolt of lightning struck the ground outside the café. The window shattered and James automatically jumped into action. He threw the table over so the top faced the window and he grabbed Aurora's arm to drag her to the ground with him. “Get down!” He shouted at the other customers, as his Olympus training took command of his thoughts and body.
Aurora groaned. If James was so on edge then it was not a normal storm outside. She peeked her head over their shield to try and survey the situation. The few pedestrians outside scattered and screamed. Aurora felt the rain on her face and James' head popped up beside her. The watch on his wrist began to beep and flash.
“What does that mean?” Aurora inquired.
“The watch alerts us when something kicks off within our vicinity. I'm not the only one here though, so I'll leave it up to her.”
Right on cue, a woman with blonde hair and a tight blue costume was thrown into a lamppost. Her body began to tumble to the floor but she regained control and landed on her feet with elegance. Her head snapped up and she stared into the sky. Aurora followed her gaze and saw a man float upwards, while lightning crackled between the black clouds behind him. Aurora looked at James for an explanation.
James stared back at Aurora. “What?”
“I know who Madame Orion is, but who is the guy in the leather jacket up there?”
James shrugged his shoulders and got out his phone. With access to the Olympus database, he was able to pull up a small, incomplete profile of the man in the sky. “It says here that he claims to be Starcry. His girlfriend was apparently killed by Olympus forces during a mission to stop a terrorist threat. His anger and grief triggered his dormant powers and blinded by emotions, he now hunts Olympus employees.”
“Sucks to be you guys.” Aurora muttered.
Madame Orion created a star in each hand and tossed them at the man. He swiftly dodged them and created his own balls of energy, very similar to Madame Orion's. Starcry tossed them with precision. As the energy was released from his hands, lightning chased after the balls. Madame Orion jumped out of the way and did a forward roll. The balls hit the ground where she was stood and the lightning hit the lamppost.
Electricity danced through the rain as Starcry continued to throw his attacks at Madame Orion. Her hands patted her utility belt in search for something to give her height. While Starcry was airborne, she was at a serious disadvantage. Her fingers brushed over her grappling hook gun and she immediately went to detach it.
Starcry's eyes lit up with joy. 'An opening!' He raised a leather-clad hand into the clouds and seemingly pulled a lightning bolt from them. His grey eyes narrowed and with all his strength he threw the bolt to the earth. Madame Orion's eyes quivered as she desperately shot the gun at a tall building.
With a 'clink!' the hook bounced off of the bricks and crashed to the pavement. The bolt of lightning sparked and split. A cage of electricity and fire sprung to life around the blonde superhero.
“Oh, that's not good.” James muttered under his breath and swallowed dryly.
Starcry angled himself so he could fly at Madame Orion, cackling in his low voice. After he repositioned in the air he suddenly stopped moving all together. “What?!” He panicked. Aurora and James could see his muscles tense and struggle as though Starcry was trying to break free from invisible chains. Then Starcry fell from the sky and collided with the street with a tremendous thud.
James was not sure what had just happened, but he hurled himself over the table and raced to Madame Orion's cage.
She was visibly cross with him. “Why are you always late, James?”
“To be honest Freya, I was here the whole time.” He sized up the cage to try and find a way to disperse the energy.
Madame Orion, Freya, only proceeded to get further irritated by James' confession. While James tried to figure out what to do with the cage, Aurora climbed out of the broken window, although she could have used the door. Being careful, she approached the villain who was pinned to the floor by an unseeable force.
“Move out of the way for a moment.” An electronic voice cautioned.
Aurora looked up at the figure. Another blue costume but his hair and face was completely obscured by a mask and white visor. He threw a rock at Starcry and that knocked the rogue Super out. The cage around Freya disappeared and the first thing she did was give James a whack around the ear.
“Ouch.” James grumbled.
Zero, the gravity manipulating vigilante, confidently walked up to Freya. He stood tall and proud, just as she did. “It looks like I've saved your life yet again, Madame.”
“Don't fool yourself, Alex. James was about to jump in and we could have handled this ourselves.”
Zero glanced at James who shrugged and said “Sure.”
Zero returned his attention to Freya and focused only on her. He tucked a stray strand of Freya's hair behind her ear.
She batted his arm away and glowered at him. “How can you stand there now, so confident and proud after you abandoned me all those years ago?” Zero scoffed at that and Freya's determined eyes only grew more serious. “I mean it, Alex!”
The disguised voice dropped and Alex's real vocals could be heard through the mask. “I abandoned you? You abandoned me! I told you how I felt about Olympus, you knew what your contract would do to me-!”
“Hey guys?” Aurora's voice fell on deaf ears.
Freya's hands balled into fists. “You're blinded by your hate for the organisation! We are not evil, we do our best to protect everyone-”
“Then why are your lot hunting me down?!” Alex raged.
“Guys?”
“Because you're a threat, Alex!” Freya cried out.
“Guuuuuys?”
“If I'm a 'threat' then it's you who made me this way.” Alex coldly stated.
“Guys!” Aurora shouted.
Both Freya and Alex turned and snapped at Aurora. “Stay out of this!”
“Okay, sure, but Starcry has GONE!” Aurora folded her arms across her chest and tapped her foot against the ground.
Both Freya and Alex stared at the empty spot where Starcry had been unconscious and then glared at each other with pure fury. “THIS IS YOUR FAULT!” They declared in unison.
James stood next to Aurora. “Hey, it's like a reunion! I don't think they recognise you without the pink hair though.”
