Nathan didn't hold back. 'Sure, and the Redeemer will wait too!' he shouted. 'And Aurora likes weaklings. Hell, Olem will turn you apart, you waste of space!'
Nathan paused. 'Sorry I got carried away. Will you learn?' He offered Herbert a hand.

Herbert nodded vigorously. "Yeah, yes, I'm tired of people not taking me seriously." He accepted Nathan's hand. "And I need to be ready to save everyone. So go again," he said steadily, getting into a ready stance and filling his head with his mother.

'Fine,' Nathan said grimly. He swung the stick again.

Herbert jerked back, dodging a blow trying to think of his mother. Her smile, the way she made him feel... warm, secure. It was cliche but it was true. It was the only way he could describe it. He tried to fill his mind with these thoughts and dodge Nathan but it was difficult.
No excuse, he told himself. He had to master this! He jumped up onto a bench as Nathan swung at his legs.

'You're a failure Herbert,' Nathan shouted! 'No one likes you! Because you fail at everything! They all see you as a fake with fancy powers!' He swung again as Herbert dodged. 'You have a duty to be the best of us, and you just suck at it!' Nathan was getting into this and going crazy!

The words hurt; they were true and it hated having them directed at him. Hell, he'd hated having them directed at Canagold: everyone had been quick to rip into him just like the rest of Olympus. It wasn't their fault! There was only so much someone could do, only so much Herbert could do! Whatever his parents said, or his old friends, the ones with powers had said. He could make a difference. He had power now, more than anyone could comprehend!
Wild with these thoughts, he saw the stick come towards his head. Roaring with rage he let it smash down on his wrist, the force shattering the wood but leaving Herbert's hand untouched. In a split second Herbert shoved a hand into Nathan (OOC: decide how he reacts) and spun, driving his fist into the wall of the Arts lecture hall with rage.
A colossal crack split the air and the entire wall shook as Herbert's hand went through. Bits of the wall collapsed, leaving a big hole open to the hall on the other side.
Herbert felt guilty about those feelings he'd just felt; it was weird and not entirely true. His parents had supported him and - he gasped as he looked baqck at Nathan.

Nathan had been thrown across the air into the beer machine. It smashed and beer poured everywhere. Nathan had instinctively turned invisible and his shape shimmered as beer ran down him. He was silent. Then...
'That was wicked! Finally! A power! Yes!' He got up, visible again and did a dance. 'Sure my back feels broken but that was good! So who's power was that?' he asked curiously, wiping beer off himself.

Herbert panted, running over to help Nathan up. "Sorry, I don't-," he rubbed his wrist, thinking. "It must have been Canagold, or Ruin. They both have super strength right? They are the only people I've met with it. I pulled it out earlier against the Redeemer but I didn't know I could do it again."
He blinked, suddenly noticing they were both invisible, Herbert included. "Erm, Nathan. I'm invisible too."

'That's interesting kid,' Nathan said, running his neck. 'So, what did you feel exactly? That will help me pin point what you need to do to get powers!'
He looked down at Herbert's words. 'Huh, so we are. That's unusual.' He pointed to a corner. 'Go over there.'

"Erm, I don't know. I was just feeling anger and like people were blaming me. It's hard to explain," he admitted. trying to think of a better answer. As he was thinking of this, he moved away from Nathan. Ten feet away. Nothing changed.
"What are you looking for?" He asked.

'Try and think it again I suppose. It seems to relate to how you felt when you saw them, or in reaction to them.' He paused. 'Your honest feelings. That is kind of it Herb. It's just practice!'
Nathan frowned. 'I was thinking maybe you were subconsciously replicating my power when you're near me. Guess the area of effect is bigger than I thought.'

Herbert tried to think of them again. The feelings in reaction to Canagold; but those had largely been a kind of fanboyism and defence. Maybe he should replicate the feelings of anger and blame? He tried, but it just didn't come this time. Maybe how others put him down, thought him uselss? It was hard; he could think about them but he didn't FEEL anything. He slammed a fist down on the nearby table but it did nothing.
"I don't know, Nathan. I'm trying, I really am," he told him, moving backwards. As he hit the end of the room, 30 feet away, his invisibility shimmered and flickered, losing strength. "Guess you're right Nathan!" He called over. "Weird how we haven't seen that before."

'Yes, it is,' Nathan agreed thoughtfully. 'Well, fallback plan is to just stick by other heroes then!' he joked lightly.
'As for the feeling, I don't know. I really don't. Maybe dig deeper?' Nathan looked defeated. 'Maybe you can only use them in times of crisis? Let's take a break and continue this later, at my house?'

Herbert laughed. "Yeah, maybe. I'd like to see how to use the Redeemer's power, honestly." He stepped forward and became invisible again, standing by Nathan.
"We'll work it out," Herbert assured Nathan. "We'll get there; at least we know they're there, somewhere." His face dropped as he remembered Chris. "Yeah... at your house." He made a pained face and pointed his hand towards Nathan.
"Nathan, I need to talk about it. I;ve been holding it in because I don't know who else I can talk to but I really think Chris is dead. I'm so committed to this because, if I'd known how to control my powers before then I'd have been able to save her.

'Haha, you with the Redeemer's powers! That won't ever happen kid. Trust me!'
He pulled up a chair and sat down. He considered Herbert properly, with a serious look. 'I already told you Chris is ok a bender. She's not dead. The Redeemer wouldn't kill a student. At least, not yet,' he mutters darkly. 'I know you have a guy feeling but find the body before you go around following that gut. It's probably wrong kid. You can't even use your parents powers. Sorry, but I doubt your foresight is up to scratch.' He held up his hands. 'Sorry, but it's true.'
He sighed. 'But I don't want to rule you out like everyone else. It's just, unlikely. The Redeemer didn't kill you; he could have, so why kill Chris?'
