The new year at Capital City University began amid much trepidation, nervous chatter and excitement. With the Vertex Corporation's on-campus research centre set to make a breakthrough with their new machine, the Quantum Wave Repulsor Engine, tensions were high and the need for security even higher.
The Dean's start of year speech included a special guest appearance and announcement from none other than Captain Omega, the leader of government-backed superhero firm, Olympus. Omega announced the presence of Olympus's Guardian Drones - humanoid robot sentinels - on campus, for extra security as the hotly debated and infinitely powerful machine was readied for activation. While the Olympus presence on campus was welcomed by some, others began a 'CAPES OFF CAMPUS' protest.
In the early hours of the following morning, as students slept in their new rooms in the Accommodation Centre, Vertex turned on their machine. Something went horribly wrong. As the Repulsor Engine malfunctioned, Captain Omega flew to the rescue, absorbing energy from the machine's core as it went critical. While his valiant efforts may have reduced the damage and saved many lives, Captain Omega failed to stop the disaster. The Repulsor Engine exploded, almost entirely destroying the Vertex Centre and bombarding the entirety of campus with cosmic energies. As a result, several students gained superpowers.
As the students started to band together in the midst of the chaos, discovering their powers as they did so, the Guardian Drones moved in to enforce security measures. As students took it upon themselves to save one another, the Drones became increasingly heavily handed with their security enforcement and it wasn't long before a showdown between Drones and a small group of students had broken out. This showdown was soon put to a stop when Champion, the new leader of Olympus in Captain Omega's absence, moved in with an Olympus taskforce and took down the Drones, which had malfunctioned as a result of the same accident that had given the students their powers. Before leaving, Champion told the students they would soon have the opportunity to go into a legitimate line of work with their powers by joining Olympus.
In the following days, the students started coming to terms with their powers. Some trained themselves in the use of their abilities, others found the very nature of their powers was still changing, and others hid from their abilities altogether.
At the end of Freshers' Week, the students headed to the on-campus nightclub, RaveSpace, for a chance to let their hair down and enjoy a night out with one another. The Super Rave featured a special guest appearance from Olympus hero Canagold, but he wasn't the only superpowered individual to turn up. Supervillain, the Green Blink, and bloodthirsty vigilante, Ruin, also turned up, wrecking the club and endangering the students caught in the midst of their battle. One casualty has been confirmed. After some of the superpowered students had done their part alongside Canagold to subdue the villains, Canagold, his Olympus teammate, Whyzz, and a squadron of Guardian Drones arrested Ruin and Blink and ensured all students got to safety.
