(Herbert's Story.)
(OOC: Sorry if I got some character's wrong. I tried to keep it all realistic, but this fills in what Herbert was thinking after Chris' death. Hope it's not too bad, it's been a while.)
It started to rain as they all stood outside, staring at the place where Chris was now residing. Nathan moved uncomfortably in his wheelchair as put a hand on Herbert's arm. They were both dressed in dark suits, an umbrella stuck onto Nate's wheelchair. The old man looked around at the other students, who appeared to have gathered together. Maybe for strength? Maybe they felt awkward standing there with Chris' family when they had only known her for a month.
Herbert hadn't said a word the entire time. He appeared lost, struggling with some emotion.
"They're not overwhelming you are they?" Nathan asked him. "I mean, all the emotions... I imagine you're absorbing them all like a sponge, right kid?"
Herb just shook his head and clenched his fists. The other Flynns, Gilbert and April, came up to put their hands on Herbert's shoulders.
"We can stay as long as you want," April told him. Again, Herbert was unresponsive, his eyes fixed on the grave in front of him. Gilbert and April eventually took the cue and walked away, arm in arm, towards the building where the reception was being held.
"Look, kid, I'm getting cold and grumpy out here. Push me inside already, I hear they have mini sausages in that place," Nathan said, making an effort to push his own wheelchair. Unlikely, the combination of laziness, care for Herbert and the arms that had the combined strength of a ten year old won out and he only rolled a couple of feet away before giving up. Well, until Nate's eye caught Aurora walking up, dressed in a long coat.
"Hey good looking, you have time for-"
Aurora shook her head. "Really just here to talk to Herb, okay Nathan?"
He sighed. "Have fun with Richmond over there," he said, rolling inside. Lucio trailed behind Aurora, quickly getting closer. He was dressed in what could only be described as 'sad suave'.
"I'm sorry Herb," Aurora said, hugging him. "I know you cared about her. I know she always liked you."
"I know," he said bitterly, finally speaking. "Trust me, I know."
Aurora nodded. "If I could transfer, I don't know, whatever you're feeling, I would. But," she looked down glumly. "It doesn't work like that." At that moment Lucio came up, his face a ask of sorrow.
"I can though," he said, offering a glowing golden hand. Aurora took it, resigned, but Herbert just stood there in the same position.
"No," he muttered. "If I wanted it, I would have used it already," he said bitterly.
"Whoa," Lucio raised his eyebrows. "We're all hurt here, amigo, not just you."
Herbert just shook his head. "You didn't have to bring Chris' corpse to her family though. You don't have to feel everyone's pain at this funeral."
"We heard," Aurora said. "About Reaper... Chris tried to fight him, didn't she?"
Herbert shrugged but just then a familiar voice sounded next to Lucio. "That's what Olympus thinks anyway," Ed said, her fur wet from the rain. Aurora gave a small cry of happiness and went to embrace her therapy dog. Lucio too for that matter. Herbert just nodded in her direction and looked around the graveyard. His uncle was talking with his parents; they kept pointing at Herbert. However that did allow him to easily tap into his uncle's power. His vision enhanced and he swept his eyes across the graveyard. He could see Alex there, with Freya. They were staying back though, talking to James. They hadn't known Chris as well as Herbert and Aurora had.
"And she was killed. Redeemer left her as a message for me," Herbert growled. "So first, I'm going to kill Reaper. Then I'm coming for the...," he trailed off as he spotted another figure, far on the edge of the site. He tapped into X-ray vision to see beyond the mask... Olem.
Aurora had followed Herb's gaze and put two and two together. "Not here," she groaned, pushing back on Herbert. Lucio and Ed joined in, because Herbert started walking towards him, pieces of stray soil lifting up around him. He was clearly losing it.
"He doesn't deserve to be here," Herbert growled, using Canagold's superhuman strength to drag the others along with him across the field. "He's a monster."
"Well, Chris didn't think so!" Aurora shouted quickly. Herbert stopped suddenly, looking around at her.
"No, I know you're trying to protect your boyfriend, but Chris and I. We were going to take him into Olympus-"
"No, no, no, no," Aurora said forcefully. "No, Chris came to me. She was angry, very angry. She said that Olem was my concern. She wouldn't get involved and she'd stop anyone else trying." Herbert looked shocked. "Look, Herb, maybe she did think he was a monster. In fact, I'm sure she did, but she also understood it was my choice. You may be able to read emotions but you're not a mind reader. You'll have to believe me, Herb."
Lucio put his hand on their shoulders. "Guys, maybe we take this indoors, eh? Get away from the rain, we're being soaked. I mean, I look good wet, but you guys look like ragged dogs." He glanced at Ed. "Er, no offence."
"Why?" Herbert muttered. "Why would she...?" he looked around, aware everyone was staring at him. He started throwing his mind back, trying to work out why she'd go back on her word to him and then he remembered that day.
"I guess that makes sense," he eventually sighed as they walked back inside. Ed excused herself, but Aurora and Lucio led him over to where Nathan was, a large platter of food in front of him.
"Chris and I, we went like, 'crime-fighting', I guess," Herbert began, desperate to get it off his chest. "We fought Margarita," even saying her name now made his heart jump a little bit, but then he felt guilty and sick, "and some other super. We were winning... I'd taken down her friend," he smiled slightly. "You should have seen us. They didn't stand a chance. But... at the end I recognised Margarita. And I stopped Chris from taking her down. I was a hypocrite. It's because I liked her and," she just stopped and turned away. "Chris never looked at me the same after that. Actually, she broke me ribs, too." He glanced at Lucio. "Thanks, by the way. I only survived because of your power."
Lucio looked kind of put out. "Well, you could have invited us along-"
"You were never around," Herbert said bluntly. "I felt Chris die," he muttered. "I felt her hate for me at the end."
Aurora shook her head. "She didn't hate you Herb. You putting too much blame on yourself. You're shutting yourself off, you have an obsession with the Redeemer."
Nathan decided to pipe in. "He also wants to take down Reaper alone."
"Whoa," Lucio cried. "You can't do that, you're not powerful enough for that! If Chris couldn't do it."
Aurora nodded urgently. "Lucio's right, you're not Chris. You're not a fighter."
Herbert had his back turned to them but he turned around slowly. "You're right," she said, a small smile creeping into his face. "I'm not Chris. I'm more powerful. I have her powers and a score of others." He raised his hand a small atomic burst appeared.
"Jesus, boy!" Nathan cried, wheeling up and pushing Herbert outside. "Where the hell did you get that?"
Herb shrugged as Aurora and Lucio came up. "I absorbed it from someone here. I think it was one of Chris' family." He held up his palm and concentrated. The small atomic burst suddenly flared with electricity. Then another wave of golden energy coated, before fire coarsed across it, and frost. He was combining powers. He was also turning white with the strain.
"Yeah, BUT," Nathan cried, pushing Herbert in the leg with his wheelchair. "You won't be able to keep that up when the owners are not all around you making it easy. You don't even know where Ted's power is coming fro. How are you supposed to emphathise with that, dumbass?"
"Grief for Chris. Done, that's how. It's how I'll use her own power too," he said quickly. "I need to go now," he said, pulling his coat around him.
"Wait!" Aurora cried, but Herbert had started running. His body started to shimmer out of existence but they could see the grass rustle as he took off into the sky.
"Where's he going?" Lucio cried, already knowing some of the answer.
Nathan just sighed, rolling back to his table. "If I know Herbert, and I know Herbert, he'll-" he glanced around as Herbert's uncle, Harold Flynn AKA The Eagle, took off into the sky after Herbert. His parents had obviously seen him leaving. His take off was much smoother, full of power and speed. He accelerated right past the hundreds and the sonic boom could be heard high above when he was safely away. He could be travelling at speeds Herbert couldn't even dream of reaching, not without decades of experience. How they would find him in the rain, invisible, however was anyone's guess. Still, it demonstrated the lack of skill Herbert had, something that was true with all his powers.
"Herbert is going to dream, I guess. Find Reaper's location, Fly there. Fight, maybe win, probably die."
"How can you let him go?" Lucio asked angrily. "I thought you were his weird mentor/friend? Couldn't you stop him?"
"Hey," Nate held up his hands. "I couldn't stop them kicking Amy of Gilmore Girls and losing my Season 7 Jess ending, no matter how much mail I wrote. I ain't stopping a superstrength, superspeed, flying, heat vision sprouting, atomic wielding, unkillable-ish, pyromanic teenager. Give a guy a break," he muttered, chewing on his sausage roll.
The others sat down sadly, resigned, as Herbert's parents started talking to supers to help find their son. Outside the rain kept pouring and lightning streaked across the sky. The Redeemer was out there with Reaper, and Herbert may have just signed his own death certificate.
