Aurora looked around the common room. She hadn't spent much time in here before. As the others chatted, she spotted a coffee machine. Knowing she wouldn't be missed if she left the group, she approached the machine and checked the information. '50p for a cup?' she raised an eyebrow. Being the cheapskate that she was, it was hard to pass up a bargain. She rummaged around in her handbag for her purse and got out a 50p coin.
With the hot cup, she returned to the group and blew on the liquid to speed up the cooling down process. Mainly because the cup was too thin and it was burning her hand.

Herbert made his way to Lucio, shaking his shoulder. "Hey dude, are you okay?" Herbert looked around, worried about something suddenly. Without talking to anyone in particular, he muttered "does anyone know how safe that experiment thing was supposed to be again..."

Face still buried in the cushion, Lucio raised a thumbs-up to show that he was still alive. Deep within the clutches of a shame-spiral, yes, but still alive.

Herbert pulled him up. "Dude, we have to try and act cool; like establish some street cred or something." He looked around him cautiously. "I mean, have you seen some of these people," he whispered. "They look a little dodgy. We have to give an impression we're not to be messed with." Herbert said all this in a tone that suggested he couldn't really believe his own words.

Even though the words only just made it through her wall I thought, Signe could not surpress a derisive snort followed by stifled laughter.

Alex cocked an eyebrow at the other students making their less than subtle entrance. As one of them helped another guy up from his spectacular faceplant, Alex put in a second headphone and fastened his attention to the phone in his hand. His newsfeed was filled with nothing but articles reporting a million and one terrible things and posts from people back home, people he barely spoke to anymore.
You've got to make friends some time, Alex. He rubbed at the bridge of his nose, not really feeling ready to socialise, but determined to do better on that front than he had in his first year on campus. He pulled his earphones out and shoved his phone into his pocket.
'Hey,' he said, walking over to the guy who had collapsed into the sofa, 'you alright? Not the most inconspicuous of entrances.'

Lucio, at this point sitting up properly, turned to face Herbert, somewhat confused. "What is street cred? My English may be good but you forget that I don't know slang. I know 'Yo, dog.' , 'hella dope' and 'bloody brilliant' but that's about it. Is this street cred part of this Rhyming Slang I have read about?"
His confusion was only multiplied by the questions posed by the newcomer. "Yes, I am fine, it was only a cushion? Why is everyone so worried? I have survived things far worse, belive me. I am grateful for your concern, though, amico. My name is Lucio Rico Bellatore, son of Nox and Hypos, master of stealth and subtlety. My friends call me Bella though." He smiled and extended his hand in greeting.

"Kid, It's like I've been telling everyone," Ed said to Herbert -- not knowing his name but not letting that stop her -- "the machine ain't safe. If it was, there wouldn't be robots and supers flying around talking about safety. They wouldn't be denying it if it weren't already in people's heads, but people look at the capes and grandstanding and think they're the problem." It was then that she noticed that Herbert was kinda jumpy-looking, scared enough and skittish without her adding to it. Comforting people was not Ed's strong point though, and she fumbled for something nice to say. "But it ain't likely to do anything. Secrets of the universe are dull, you know? And people get bored. I wouldn't -- don't worry, kid."
She paused for a moment. "You should be more like Lucio here. He's already figured out surviving in London." She pat Lucio on the shoulder. "If anybody comes at him, he'll trip over and talk at them 'til they're so confused they leave. You gotta admit, it's a hell of a strategy. It even made slugger stop scowling long enough to come over here n' check on him." Ed nodded at Alex. The others had been less than subtle about their impressions of tall, dark and broody, but Ed had never let little things like first impressions and a thunderous expression get in her way.

Sighing to himself, Olem gently closed his book and put it away within his coat. Deciding nobody would be stupid enough to touch his bag, he picked himself up from the armchair he has settled in, for he had come to the conclusion that he best introduce himself to the crowd of students that had assembled nearby, as they may be potential study colleagues, or people sharing the same living space. He clumped over towards one of the members, a fairly tall girl. He held out a large gloved hand, in greetings towards the person.
"Hello" he rumbled, waiting for her response.

'Master of stealth and subtlety, huh? I can see that.' Alex shook Bella's extended hand. 'Bella. I'm Alex. Master of just about enough to get me into uni.'
He then turned to Ed with half a smirk. 'I didn't realise I was scowling. I thought all your doomsday talk about the campus's black hole machine was setting a great mood!' Before he said another word, Alex stopped himself, not wanting to give too blunt a first impression. Maybe trying to join the conversation rather than criticise it would be a better tactic. 'Seriously though, I wouldn't worry about that machine. It's just another far-fetched idea funded by people with far too much money and far too little concern for where that money could do the most good. They'll turn it on and the day after that everything will be exactly the same. The only real impact it's having is giving Olympus an excuse to use our campus as a testing ground for their police state drones out there.'

Ed hastily tucked her pencil behind her ear again and shook Olem's hand, looking up -- and up -- at him. It wasn't very often that she had to do that. "How'd you do?" she asked, a little distracted by the Master of Baleful Looks.
Ed gave Alex a shrewd look, then grinned. It was a very toothy smile. "I think the room has enough cheer for all of us. But I take your point, kid. You really think that's what it's about? Training?" She took out her pencil again. "You at the rally in the Square? Captain Omega made a big deal of the Quantum Wave --" she paused to try and remember the name, then figured it wasn't worth it "--thing, you think it was to draw attention away from the guardians?" She tapped her pencil against her chin and made a note of that on her notepad, never far from hand. "Why a university campus? They had to know the whole thing would end up on Youtube in its entirety before he even finished flying off. Maybe the protests--" she trailed off, looking down at her notepad. "This whole thing stinks."

Olem smirked slightly, putting his hand into his pocket, and resumed fiddling with his packet of cigarettes. "I'm fine, thanks for asking. What about yourself? You seem to be amusingly paranoid that something is going to go wrong" he paused for a second, scowling "Captain Omega? I didn't realise that he was on campus. What's a big shot 'super hero' doing here anyway?" He looked at the guy next to Ed, faintly amused by the boys amusing attempt at being 'anti establishment'. "You seem awfully against Olympus, have they wronged you to inspire such derision?"

'You missed the big speech?' said Alex, turning to the newcomer. 'Captain Big Shot was explaining how Olympus's business partners are turning on Vague Science Machine Number Forty-Seven this week from campus, so they've brought in a load of Guardian Drones. But hey, no, Olympus are great. You know, as long as you only focus on their successes and not their methods or their management or the policies governing them or the people they're happy to leave for dead. If you ignore all that, what's not to love about a police force of billionaire gods and superhumans?'
Alex bit back the urge to say anything else on the topic, knowing he had a tendency to struggle to stay calm when he was speaking about Olympus. 'Anyway,' he said, 'I don't think I got all your names? Have you all been chucked in the rooms here too?'

“Edgy.” Aurora whispered under her breath. By this point, her coffee had cooled down enough for her to sip at. As soon as the liquid hit her tongue, she subtly spat it back into the cup. 'Never mind, I don't think I can drink this 50p coffee.' She wiped her mouth, hoping no-one had seen her and then looked at Alex.
“My name is Aurora, third year, psychology. I should mention that there are three things you shouldn't talk about with friends at university. Politics, dinosaurs and the pronunciation of 's-c-o-n-e'. Definitely avoid all 3 when drunk. I think Capes come under politics, so let's just stick to introductions and copious amounts of alcohol tonight.” She smiled.

Herbert shook his head at Lucio. "I'll have to teach you slang," before he turned to Ed, who appeared to have been the only one who heard his previous comment about the machine.
"Thanks," he mumbled, not quite sure if that was the right thing to say after that doom and gloom speech. To any extent, he held out his hand. "My name's Herbert; I didn't catch yours". At this point though, a newcomer had entered their group, a very very tall newcomer. Herbert was about to dive into conversation before he heard the dodgy looking dark haired guy speaking about Supers with a come of 'overthrow the government' vibe.
"Hey guys, calm down about the Supers, okay? They're just trying to do their job. It's not like they are trying to seek attention; I mean, why would they want to be subjected to the spotlight? Al it brings them is negative comments." Herbert realised he might have sounded rather aggressive when he said this, so he decided to lighten it up.
"I mean, I understand what you're saying, both of you," he looked at both Alex and Olem, "but none of you really know what it's like to be Super, the kind of responsibility that comes with it." Herbert brushed hair out of his face and cleared his throat. "Anyway... my name's Herbert Flynn," he offered one hand to Alex and Olem and another to Lucio, so he might finally stand up.
